PAST VOLUNTEER TESTIMONIAL
“My name is Kendal and I had my first experience with Camp-Heal-a-Heart the week of August 11-15 of 2018. I got involved in volunteering because a close friend of mine, Pheonix, was the volunteer coordinator that summer. Pheonix had grown up through Camp He-a-He and was very passionate about the camp. There was a need for overnight volunteers and I was quickly suckered in. I was hesitant at first because its hard to predict what to expect but the experience was exceptional, and I would do it all over again in a heartbeat.
The days were long and busy but so full of compassion and excitement that you didn’t notice the exhaustion that built up till you were plopping into your bed. Camp coordinators and volunteers would get up before the children for meeting and have calming cups of coffee among new friends while we prepped for the day coming. It was wonderful. We got to enjoy the peaceful serenity of the beautiful campsite in its rate moments of silence before there was the joyous noises of laughter singing and cheering.
Meal times were always engaging and so very special. In the dining hall we shared meals together and played games together, sometimes we were downright silly, but we also helped clean up after one another rand shared with each other, never letting anyone feel excluded. Each meal was prepared considerably and there was always heaps to go around. I can’t thank Carla and Charlene enough for all the work they put into cooking three times a day for everyone at the camp.
In the cabins we made sure everyone was tucked into blankets and cozy enough for bed. We would chit-chat a little before lights out and talk about excitement for the things that would happen the following day. By the end of the week the dining hall and cabins felt more like a home than home itself for some.
There was truly a sense of comradely amount every camper and every volunteer. By the time everyone had to go home hugs were being passed around and many warm words of praise were shared from both fellow campers and camp leaders. I know everyone left eager to come back next year. I believe each one of us found some purpose and hope for the future, in their visit.
The children/young adults all came so far in learning how to open up and share their feelings. Camp He-a-He is truly a safe space for kids to express themselves in any way they feel comfortable without worry of judgement. It was an incredibly rewarding movement to be involved in. Watching these kids develop among their peers, who are all close in age, and who all have similar life experiences, is a truly heartwarming site to behold. ” – Kendal
